James Joyce's The Dead - 100 Years

James JoyceIn 1907, a century before the launching of this site, James Joyce dictated the final pages of "The Dead"  to his brother Stanislaus from a hospital bed in Trieste. This was to become the 15th and closing entry in Joyce's short story collection, The Dubliners.

Here in commemoration of the centennial of this event we offer the original text coupled with Irish author and playwright, Anne Pigone's modern day parallel "The Ugly", written 100 years later.  You can read either "The Dead" or "The Ugly" by clicking on the appropriate links.  You can also check how the two stories match paragraph for paragraph up by using the dropdown function on the Dead / Ugly comparison page .

"The Ugly" is a work of intertextuality. Each paragraph of "The Dead" is parallelled with an equivalent in Anne Pigone's story. Each character is given a modern-day counterpart.
